The Canvas Utility tool is a self‑service resource designed to give instructors greater control and flexibility in managing their Canvas courses. With this tool, faculty can independently perform tasks that once required submitting a support request—saving time and streamlining course preparation.
Canvas Utilities empowers instructors to:
-
- Create Sandbox Courses - Quickly generate sandbox spaces to build, experiment with, or revise course materials at any time—no waiting required.
- Merge Course Sections - Combine multiple course sections into a single primary course in Canvas. This is particularly helpful for instructors teaching several sections of the same class.
- View Course Merges - Easily verify that merged courses are displaying as expected, ensuring everything is set up correctly before teaching begins.
Accessing Canvas Utilities
To access Canvas Utilities, users will need to use their University of Nebraska login information:
- Log in to Canvas using your NUID
- In the left side global navigation menu, click on Help
- Click on Canvas Utilities
If you are unsure of your University of Nebraska login information or need to reset your password, you can use the TrueYou Self‑Service Account Lookup tool at: https://trueyou.nebraska.edu/account/lookup.
UNL and UNO faculty currently have access to Canvas Utilities for Spring and Summer 2026 courses.
Access to Canvas Utilities will expand to all campuses within the unified Canvas environment beginning in March 2026, supporting course development for Fall 2026 and future semesters.
If you’d like support with any of the processes in Canvas Utilities—or simply prefer to collaborate directly with our team—the ITS Canvas support team is here to help. We can assist with course setup, section merges, sandbox creation, and other Canvas tasks to ensure everything is ready for your teaching needs.
