Joel has gone above and beyond in his time at UNL, most especially supporting the campus research initiative by directing license activities of important and complex research operations such as the DIOCLES laser and neutron generator.
Through his vision and leadership, programs and procedures are in place to support UNL’s expanding research enterprise as it relates to radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices. In successfully coordinating with the Department of Energy to return several radioactive material sources, he greatly reduced long-term liability to the university. Most recently Joel has endeavored to control costs, to the extent possible, for the remediation and clean-up project at the Agriculture Research and Development Center. His efforts at ARDC include: modeling and calculating remediation goals for radioactive materials, developing rapid screening field methods and coordinating laboratory analysis of field samples.
A colleague says of Joel: “He is well-respected by his staff and exceptional at identifying campus issues that may not occur until the long-term, but require planning in the short-term.”
