Through a partnership with the University of Gitwe in Rwanda, the Department of Anesthesiology has several global health opportunities for our faculty and resident physicians as well as CRNAs and students. Yearly surgical trips allow physicians and trainees to practice in an underserved area. Education and research is ongoing. With the opening of the University of Gitwe School of Medicine in 2013, Gitwe Hospital now serves as a teaching hospital and became the second institution in Rwanda to offer a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree. Two surgical trips have been successfully completed, and over 70 patients have had access to health care (mainly cleft repairs and large goiter excisions) that they may otherwise not have received.
