I am pleased to nominate Alex Zabel, Grounds Manager at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, for the Board of Regents KUDOS Award.
Alex has made a significant and lasting impact on the appearance, sustainability, and operational efficiency of UNK. He has led the Grounds team to elevate the quality and care of our campus while promoting good resource stewardship.
Strategic initiatives to improve operational efficiency through intentional landscape planning align beautification efforts with available resources. Alex led plant selection, reduced high-maintenance areas, and implemented more sustainable practices. His native grasses and plantings are both visually impactful and better suited to this climate. The campus’s natural beauty is enhanced while reducing water usage, maintenance demands, and long-term operating costs.
Alex has restored and revitalized neglected areas of campus. His vision, persistence, and attention to detail, have several overlooked spaces cleaned up, reimagined, and brought back to life making everything more cohesive and welcoming.
He brings a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset to every challenge. When responding to severe weather, preparing campus for major events, coordinating seasonal transitions, or supporting broader facilities initiatives, he demonstrates professionalism, accountability, and pride in his work.
Alex leads by example fostering a culture of teamwork, ownership, and continuous improvement within his department. He mentors others, collaborating across campus, and quietly steps in wherever needed.
Alex’s work impacts our grounds while shaping the daily experience of our community and strengthens the image and identity of UNK. He exemplifies the spirit of service and excellence this recognition is meant to honor reflecting the values that make UNK strong. Joining Alex today are his supervisor, Director of Facilities Michael Cremers. Please help me thank Alex for his superior service to every one of us.
