Phares Elected Chair of NU Board of Regents
The University of Nebraska Board of Regents today elected Bob Phares as chairman for 2010. Phares, from North Platte, represents District 7 and was elected to the Board in 2006 after being appointed in August of that same year by Gov. Dave Heineman to fill a vacant seat. He served as vice chairman in 2009.

Regent Bob Whitehouse of Papillion, representing District 4, was elected vice chairman for 2010. Phares is president and owner of Phares Financial Services Inc., a financial planning and services firm in North Platte. He is a former board president of the Kearney State College Foundation and past member of the Mid-Plains Community College Foundation. Phares is past president of the League of Nebraska Municipalities and former board chairman of the North Platte Chamber of Commerce, and he has been involved with the Great Plains Regional Medical Center for more than 20 years. He was elected mayor of North Platte at age 28 and served two terms. Phares graduated with honors from Kearney State College (now UNK) in 1962.

Whitehouse was elected to the Board in 2006. He was principal of Bryan Senior High School in Omaha from 1987 to 2000, and has served in teaching and leadership positions at Bryan Junior High School, Omaha South and Omaha Central. Whitehouse serves on the UNK Alumni Association Board and is a past board member of the Metropolitan Community College Foundation. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Nebraska.

The Board of Regents consists of eight voting members who are elected to six-year terms, and four non-voting student regents who represent each of the four NU campuses.
