Jeanne Scarpello Head Coach Mavericks Softball Team UNO
The Board of Regents is pleased today to present a KUDOS award to Jeanne (Jean) Scarpello, head coach of the Mavericks softball team at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Jeanne just finished her eighth season at UNO – with a record of 353-109-1. She has led the team to six NCC titles, eight straight regional tournament appearances, and one national championship. Her team finished the 2007 season ranked Number 7 with a 34-20 record, after advancing to their sixth NCAA II national tournament.
But Jeanne does not earn the Kudos award with her statistics, she earns it with the inspiration and dedication she brings to her job and to the young women on her team.
Jeanne counsels players that the competitive spirit is important on the playing field – but just as important in academics – and her guidance is evidenced by the number of her players who earn places on the Academic Honor Roll each year.
UNO Athletic Director David Miller said this: “Having a top quality team is important and impressive for the university. More important and more impressive, however, is the level of achievement that Coach Scarpello’s players maintain in the classroom. These young women are true student-athletes.”
Jeanne motivates her team members to be good students and good citizens, as well as good players. She has coached six All-Americans, two CoSida Academic All-Americans, 42 all-North Central Conference members and 10 academic all-North Central Conference selections.
Please join me in thanking Jeanne Scarpello for her contributions to UNO, and to so many young softball players at UNO. Congratulations for receiving a KUDOS Award.
