Clerical Assistants for Athletics, UNO
Geri Backora and Roxie Freeman are longtime friends and co-workers in the UNO Athletic Department. With their desks located just a few feet apart in the Sapp Fieldhouse, each is able to provide a helping hand to the other with the many projects of the nearly 70-person department.

Geri was honored as the April 2008 UNO Employee of the Month for her work ethic and organization. She collaborates with a number of coaches and administrators, and says her days are never the same. She enjoys the variety and excitement her position provides.
In 1998, Geri joined UNO as an administrative assistant with the Diet Pepsi/UNO Women's Walk. She served in that capacity for six years before moving to men's athletics. Now responsible for keeping the records of student-athletes in numerous sports, scheduling meeting room appointments, maintaining office machines and ordering supplies, Geri also assists with many departmental fundraisers.
In her nomination, a colleague wrote, "Geri is very creative and has great ideas to offer. With her years of experience here, she is a great resource for many of her co-workers. Geri is always pleasant and fun to work with, and her work ethic is amazing."
Roxie Freeman, the June 2008 UNO Employee of the Month, began her service to UNO in 2004 as an administrative assistant. She has been recognized for her outstanding dedication to the Diet Pepsi/UNO Women's Walk and the university.
For the past 23 years, the Women's Walk - the nation's largest walk of its kind - has been a major fundraiser for female student-athletes through the UNO Athletics Scholarship Program. Among other related tasks, Roxie keeps track of the walk's corporate sponsors and organizes registration, including check-in for more than 1,000 walkers.
With her vast computer knowledge, Roxie provides vital assistance in the production of materials for the department's many events. She most enjoys projects involving graphic design.
In her nomination, a colleague wrote, "Roxie is always at work and willing to go the extra mile to get things done. She has a great sense of humor and is pleasant to work with."
Both Geri and Roxie like their jobs tremendously because faculty, staff and students are what make the work day such a joy. "We have a good time and get an amazing amount of work accomplished," Roxie said. Backora agreed, saying, "It is a great place to work! My co-workers and coaches are exceptional people!"
Congratulations to Geri Backora and Roxie Freeman, UNO's KUDOS award winners for September 2008.
