Biosafety Director for Environmental Health and Safety, UNL
Matt has been instrumental in building a robust biosafety program at UNL. Among his achievements is the creation of an online protocol registration process that is integrated into the NU-Grant system, thereby streamlining the effort required to conduct work with biological agents. He also has earned recognition from regulatory authorities for implementing systems that demonstrate compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines.

During a recent review of the biosafety program, for example, NIH auditors noted that “unanimous praise was heard from UNL faculty for the biosafety officer, institutional biosafety committee chair, and other IBC staff. All were recognized for being accessible, efficient and attentive to their needs.” This reflects the number of guidance documents and training modules that Matt has authored to assist principal investigators as they develop biosafety manuals and inform staff of the principles of safe conduct of research with biological agents.
Matt has worked diligently to develop relationships with peer institutions and has been invited to speak at regional conferences to share his experience in building a biosafety program. Matt’s commitment to excellence in his service and in the programs he administers certainly provides faculty in the biological research areas a much-appreciated comfort level.
