The Board of Regents is honored to present a KUDOS Award to Ms. Suzanne Exstrom, Senior Academic Advisor for Advising & Career Development at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Suzanne is a Loper who has served the University with dedication, enthusiasm, and an unwavering commitment to student success. Her 29-year, UNK journey began in Management and Marketing, then to the Teacher Certification Office, then the Alumni Association, and on to the Social Work Department. In 2020, she served in Academic Advising and was promoted to Senior Advising Specialist in 2023.
Her ‘student-first’ mindset and her ability to connect with others have impacted both students and fellow advisors. Her comprehensive training materials help new faculty become confident, effective advisors. Students who are changing majors or pursuing a Bachelor’s in General Studies, receive encouragement, clarity, and direction. And, in collaboration with UNK Global, a process was created for international students to smoothly transition to campus.
Suzanne is a pillar of support for students and colleagues alike. She lives by the message of the “Starfish Story,” reminding others that making a difference, no matter how small, matters deeply: “It made a difference for that one.”
Invaluable to the team, Suzanne helps to keep fellow advisors informed in a monthly newsletter that includes professional development resources, timely updates, and thoughtfully written template communications, always tailored to meet the needs of today’s students.
Her personal pursuit of a master’s degree exemplifies her commitment to lifelong learning and her passion for empowering student success. UNK is undeniably stronger because of Suzanne Exstrom, and she embodies the spirit of the Kudos Award.
With Suzanne today are her husband Chris Exstrom and sons Robbie and Geoff. Congratulations Suzanne!
