On behalf of the Board of Regents, I am honored to present the KUDOS Award to Renee Besse, Director of Financial Aid at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Renee's 35-year career at UNK's Office of Financial Aid began as a financial aid counselor and technician. Her degree in Business Administration-Computer Science from UNK provided a foundation for her expertise in data management and programming. She has designed, implemented, and managed vital technology and systems, significantly improving the efficiency of awarding aid and scholarships. As Associate Director and, now as Director since 2022, she has navigated countless changes, evolving state and federal regulations, information systems, and student expectations.
She is an inspiration to her colleagues, demonstrating positive leadership, a strong work ethic, and unwavering encouragement. Her ability to navigate challenges, whether during COVID, FAFSA changes, system upgrades, or even building maintenance issues, is truly commendable.
Serving students is at the heart of her work. She understands that financial aid can be life-changing, and she and her staff provide unwavering support and encouragement. Their daily affirmation, “We know you can do this,” empowers students to achieve their academic goals.
Renee embodies Loper Spirit, leading her team to victory in homecoming spirit awards, decorating contests, and March Madness brackets.

Joining Renee are her husband Jack, one of her three daughters, Cassidy Casey and supervisor, Kelly Bartling, Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management and Marketing.
