New in Spring 2026 - Request for Faculty Access to Human Captioning
All videos created with the YuJa academic video platform, which is available at all campuses across the University of Nebraska System (UNL, UNK, UNO), are automatically machine-captioned at no additional cost. In partnership with the University of Nebraska System Compliance Office, the Chief Academic Officers, and Interim Provost Dr. David Jackson, this form can be used to request professional human captioning for videos on YuJa. Each form submitted through this process will be routed to the respective Dean’s Office before NU ITS will enable the access for the identified faculty member.
Note: you will need to log in using your NU ID. On the UNK and UNO campus, faculty, Chairs, and Deans may be complete the form. On the UNL campus, Deans offices will be responsible for submitting the form for interested faculty.
Machine-generated captions can be a helpful starting point for accessibility, supporting many learners and often providing a high degree of accuracy. However, machine captions do not always meet accessibility requirements, as they are not fully accurate.
Even small errors - such as missing a single word or mishearing technical terms - can alter the meaning of course content and create confusion for students. Factors like background noise, multiple speakers, and highly technical language can further reduce the quality of machine-generated captions. According to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), captions must be fully accurate to meet the needs of all users.
Automatic captions should be viewed as a starting point for developing fully accurate, accessible course materials. Faculty are responsible for ensuring their courses and all materials are accessible to all learners. You always have the option to manually review and correct machine captions to improve accuracy. This short training course provides step-by-step instructions for reviewing and editing captions in YuJa.
Colleges or departments can request professional human captioning for academic videos.
Please note: Respective colleges and/or departments making and approving requests through this form will be responsible for covering the cost associated with the human captions requested for this particular faculty member. The market rate is $1.25 per minute for this service. For this reason, Dean’s Offices may want to be selective in utilizing this service.
This process is not for individual student accommodation needs. For those requests, please continue to work directly with your campus Accessibility Services Office.
All audio or video content created and produced and posted on a public-facing University website must be captioned when posted.
Captioning must have an accuracy rate equal to that offered by a third-party vendor captioning service, and in a manner consistent with industry standards regarding synchronicity, completeness, and placement.
The University of Nebraska ICT Accessibility Policy references the guidelines of the Web Accessibility Content Guidelines (WCAG) in regards to captioning both live and pre-recorded events.
University of Nebraska campuses have tools and solutions for captioning to help you.
