AI Governance Group
In Fall 2026, an AI Governance Group is being created with representation from the faculty, research community, NU Legal, compliance, ITS, the AI Institute, Business & Finance, and procurement. Each NU System campus will have representation. Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. David Jackson will serve as Executive Sponsor, and the group will be co-chaired by Chief Operating Officer Jon Watts and Vice President for IT/CIO Bret Blackman.
This AI Governance Group will enact, manage, and align to the specifications of NU Executive Memorandum 48, including:
- Establishing business processes so that NU faculty, staff and students know what AI tools are acceptable to use for their work and what AI tools are not acceptable and/or need an approved exception prior to use
- Working across divisions to examine the multitude of AI tools moving through the procurement process on p-cards and cost centers
- Reviewing, managing, and responding to AI exception requests (check back soon here for a link to submit an exception request for non-enterprise AI tool use)
- Helping to articulate a transparent AI tool roadmap for NU to help manage expenses, reduce risk, fill service gaps, and reduce duplication not only in standalone AI tools (i.e. OpenAI) but also AI packages being offered by existing g vendors broadly in use today at NU (i.e. Canvas, Salesforce).
