Cybersecurity Basics
Whether you’re logging into Canvas, accessing research data, or managing university systems, these cybersecurity fundamentals are essential:
Passwords
- Create strong, memorable passwords to protect your university accounts.
- Use complex, unique passwords to keep your academic and personal data safe.
- Avoid using the same password across multiple platforms—especially university systems.
Password Managers
- Simplify your login process with secure password management tools.
- Store and organize your passwords safely with trusted password manager apps.
- Let a password manager do the remembering—so you don’t have to.
Multifactor Authentication (MFA)
- Double up your security with multi-factor authentication on university and personal accounts.
- MFA adds a second layer of protection—like a code sent to your phone—making it harder for attackers to gain access.
- Enable MFA wherever possible to keep your data locked down.
Software Updates
- Keep your devices current—install updates to fix security flaws and improve performance.
- Don’t ignore update notifications—they often contain critical security patches.
- Updating your software is one of the easiest ways to stay protected.
Avoiding Scams
- Learn to recognize phishing emails and suspicious links before you click.
- Stay alert for scams targeting students and staff—especially those asking for login credentials or financial info.
- Think before you click: if something feels off, it probably is.
