Cybersecurity Awareness Month at the University of Nebraska

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and here at the University of Nebraska, we’re joining the national effort to promote safer online practices across campus. Whether you're a student managing coursework, a faculty member conducting research, or a staff member supporting university operations, cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility.

Cybersecurity Basics

Whether you’re logging into Canvas, accessing research data, or managing university systems, these cybersecurity fundamentals are essential:

Passwords

  • Create strong, memorable passwords to protect your university accounts.
  • Use complex, unique passwords to keep your academic and personal data safe.
  • Avoid using the same password across multiple platforms—especially university systems.

Password Managers

  • Simplify your login process with secure password management tools.
  • Store and organize your passwords safely with trusted password manager apps.
  • Let a password manager do the remembering—so you don’t have to.

Multifactor Authentication (MFA)

  • Double up your security with multi-factor authentication on university and personal accounts.
  • MFA adds a second layer of protection—like a code sent to your phone—making it harder for attackers to gain access.
  • Enable MFA wherever possible to keep your data locked down.

Software Updates

  • Keep your devices current—install updates to fix security flaws and improve performance.
  • Don’t ignore update notifications—they often contain critical security patches.
  • Updating your software is one of the easiest ways to stay protected.

Avoiding Scams

  • Learn to recognize phishing emails and suspicious links before you click.
  • Stay alert for scams targeting students and staff—especially those asking for login credentials or financial info.
  • Think before you click: if something feels off, it probably is.
