ChatGPT Edu
ITS provides systemwide management and support of ChatGPT Edu. While we provide the management and support, decisions about use and credit allotment are made at a campus level. This page serves as a broad resource about ChatGPT Edu availability, cost, and data protections.
Note: ChatGPT Edu is currently only available for UNO, UNL, UNK, NCTA, and the Office of the President.
Cost
Core access is provided at no cost to the user. Cost for expanded access will differ by campus and department.
Access
Access to ChatGPT is available for approved faculty, staff, and students. Access may vary by campus and department.
Data & AI Use
ChatGPT Edu can be used with any low risk and most medium risk information. Identifiable medium risk data is not approved.
Apply for ChatGPT Edu Access
Faculty & Staff Access
Faculty and staff are able to apply for individual, small group, or departmental access to ChatGPT Edu using this form. Users will need to submit their primary campus, campus email address, role, and number of licenses needed. NOTE: if applying for a group or department, additional campus emails and names will be requested. Faculty and staff will need to complete the Generative AI Security Essentials Training prior to gaining access to ChatGPT Edu.
Student Access
On approved campuses, Faculty can request access for ChatGPT Edu for students in their course(s) by filling out this form. Faculty will need to provide their campus email address, primary campus, semester they want students to have ChatGPT Edu access, and the course prefix and number(s). Students will need to complete the Generative AI Security Essentials training prior to gaining access to ChatGPT Edu.

How do I login to ChatGPT Edu?
When an individual is first added to ChatGPT Edu, they will need to accept their invitation and login via the email they receive from OpenAI. After the initial login, users can go to chatgpt.com and login using their email address; users will then be asked to login via SSO, similar to other software you use.
How do I know I’m using ChatGPT Edu or a personal ChatGPT account?
You will know you’re using ChatGPT Edu because of the logo you’ll see in the bottom left corner. Each instance has a specific logo that represents their campus or area of work (e.g. “O” logo for UNO, “N” logo for UNL, etc.).
Am I able to use Connectors/apps?
Connectors/apps present a potential liability regarding data security. Due to this, connectors/apps are approved on a case-by-case basis. If you’re interested in having a connector/app enabled, please reach out to the emerging technologies team at its-emtech@nebraska.edu.
How do credits work?
Each campus has been allotted a pool of credits. As you use advanced features and models, the number of credits available within the pool decreases.
Think of it as water in a cup - as you drink the water, the total amount of water in the cup, decreases. The Emerging Technologies team is working with campus liaisons to identify if and what the credit allotment per person will be per month. This is an ongoing conversation and a learning experience to understand what campuses are able to do and what an appropriate allotment of credits is.
Can I get an increase in my credit allotment?
Emerging Technologies is currently working with campus liaisons to identify a process for those that require an increase of credits. As more is available, we will share it on our website.
Can I access the GPT store?
ChatGPT Edu users will have access to GPTs created by OpenAI, and university approved GPTs. Due to the lack of understanding how other’s GPTs may be using our data, all 3rd-party GPTs are not currently enabled. If you’re interested in having a 3rd-party GPT enabled, please reach out to the emerging technologies team at its-emtech@nebraska.edu. These will go through an approval process and be approved on a case-by-case basis.
Can I get access to Codex and Work within ChatGPT?
Due to the increased risk associated with tools like codex, these are currently only enabled for those with coding/programming backgrounds. If you have a background in these areas and would like access, please reach out to the emerging technologies team at its-emtech@nebraska.edu. Please note that codex is an advanced feature, and requires credits to use it.
What happens if I've created a personal account using my work email, but now I want access to ChatGPT Edu?
There are two options:
- Change the email address on your personal account from your campus email address to a personal one before accepting your invitation to ChatGPT Edu.
- Merge your personal workspace into your new ChatGPT Edu workspace.
