This October, University of Nebraska System joins the global effort to celebrate Cybersecurity Awareness Month and encourage our campus community to "make life difficult for scammers."
Cybercriminals count on people taking shortcuts, reusing passwords, ignoring software updates, or clicking before thinking. The good news? You don't need to be a cybersecurity expert to protect yourself. A few simple habits can make a big difference.
Throughout October, we'll share the stories of real-life scammers and show how you can make their jobs harder by:
- Using strong passwords and a password manager
- Turning on multifactor authentication (MFA)
- Keeping software updated
- Learning to recognize and report scams
This year's theme, "Don't Make It Easy for Them," reminds us that cybersecurity is everyone's responsibility. When we adopt these simple behaviors, cybercriminals have fewer opportunities to steal information, compromise accounts, or disrupt our work and studies.
Follow along all month for tips, stories, and events that will help you stay safer online.
How ITS Is Supporting You
While cybersecurity starts with individual actions, you are not in this fight alone.
Behind the scenes, the Information Technology Services (ITS) team works every day to protect campus systems, monitor emerging threats, and provide the tools, technologies, and training needed to keep our university secure. Our security professionals continuously analyze threats, respond to incidents, and strengthen defenses across the University of Nebraska System, blocking more than 270 million cyber threats every day.
Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, and every member of our campus community contributes to a stronger security culture. Let's work together to make life more difficult for cybercriminals—one smart click at a time.
