NExT Project

This Project is Set to Inject a Healthy Dose of Income and Jobs into Nebraska’s Economy

“Since the Ebola outbreak of 2014, the federal government, including military, the CDC and the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, has put its faith—and significant funding—in the med center’s biopreparedness efforts and expertise. They see us as a tremendous national resource.”

Chris Kratochvil, M.D., UNMC’s associate vice chancellor for clinical research, knows the University is already a leader in its field. And with its next venture, we can expect even greater things from UNMC, especially when it comes to economic impact and creating jobs. It’s called the NExT Project.

UNMC—and its primary clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine—already serves as an economic engine for the state, generating an annual estimated impact of $4.8 billion. UNMC researchers bring in valuable grants. UNMC alums, as highly paid health-care professionals, invigorate their communities. And numerous construction projects are building an economic boom.

“This project would result in an estimated 8,700 H-3 jobs.”

Now, the proposed NExT Project, an enormous public-private undertaking to build a new academic medical center facility and federal all-hazard disaster response partnership, is poised to take this economic impact to a new level.

The multi-year building project would result in thousands of construction jobs. But, also, an estimated 8,700 “H3” jobs—permanent high-wage, high-skill, high-demand positions.

The NExT Project is forecasted to add $1.3 billion annually to the state economy when the project is fully operational in 2030, generating $38.2 million in annual state tax revenue.

“The med center already is a prime mover in the state’s economy,” said UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D. “This project would put us on yet another level, to enhance economic development and play a critical national leadership role.”

While UNMC is able to green light massive projects like NExT thanks in part to private funding, bringing the ideas to life isn’t possible without continued financial support of the University of Nebraska. To help UNMC continue to shine as a nationally recognized resource and prime economic engine, it’s essential to ensure it gets the financial support it deserves for the future.
