We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Phil Smith, a longtime faculty member and visionary leader whose work in infectious disease and biopreparedness placed the University of Nebraska Medical Center—and our state—on the national and global stage.
Dr. Smith was more than an extraordinary physician and scientist. He was a true innovator and mentor who understood the importance of preparedness and collaboration in times of crisis. His leadership in establishing the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit set a global standard for excellence, and his commitment to training the next generation of healthcare professionals helped shape countless careers in medicine and public health.
On behalf of the University of Nebraska, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Smith’s family, friends and the entire UNMC community. We are grateful for his contributions to our university, our state and to global health.
