For 175 children, Dental Day 2009 wasn't a normal trip to the dentist.
Superheroes wearing balloon hats and carrying 3-foot toothbrushes led them to appointments, where more than $100,000 in services were offered free of charge to children from Beatrice, Fremont, Norfolk, Madison, Hastings, Grand Island, Harvard, Lexington, Wakefield, North Bend, Columbus, Crete and Lincoln.
The event, hosted each February by the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry, provides dental screening, diagnosis, cleaning and care to underserved children in Nebraska. Each child receives services such as cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, cavity fillings, education and emergency care as needed.
Children's Dental Day began in 2001, and in 2004, the program expanded to include a two-day trip to the Nebraska Panhandle. In 2005, the program expanded to include 4 half days of clinical activity at the Central Community College dental hygiene clinic in Hastings.
