Joe came to UNO in 1980 as a graduate student, but he was impressed with the UNO recreation programs and facilities, so he applied to be a graduate assistant in the program.
Today, Joe directs the program, which is headquartered in the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation building on the UNO campus. He supervises five assistant directors, three support staff members, and five graduate assistants. He also oversees the many recreation programs and the 100 student volunteers who assist in their operation.
Running a campus recreation program, he says, is much like coaching an athletic team - the program is only as good as the staff. But good facilities help, and Joe has expressed appreciation for the physical improvements on the campus and in his program. Recently, he worked with architects and contractors to convert four racquetball courts into a new weight room - a project that he called "fun and enlightening."
