The Board of Regents is pleased to present a KUDOS award to Margaret (Peggy) Abels, Director of the Office of Health Science Programs at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
The Health Science Programs at UNK provide students with academic advising, career counseling, assistance with applications and the interview process, a formal shadowing and volunteer program, and the sponsorship of the UNK Health Science Club.
Peggy has served as Director of the Health Science Programs for 12 years now. And under her leadership, the program has experienced impressive growth. In 1996, for example, the office served about 300 students. Today more than 500 students are pursuing pre-professional programs.
Peggy’s responsibilities are many and vast: She manages 19 different pre-professional health-related career programs, ranging from allied health professions like radiologic technology and respiratory therapy – to pre-pharmacy, pre-optometry, and pre-med. In the past several years Peggy has worked with UNMC to develop three new cooperative scholarship programs: NU PATHS, the Health Science Scholars Program, and the Kearney Health Opportunities Program.
Dr. Francis Harrold, Dean of UNK’s College of Natural and Social Sciences says: “Peggy has been tireless and very successful in promoting the growth and strength of our Health Sciences Programs.”
Peggy is joined today by her mother, Jackie Bartak and her daughter, Megan.
We are honored to present this KUDOS Award to Peggy Abels for her exceptional service to the University of Nebraska at Kearney, for her outstanding commitment to her profession and for the exceptional service she provides to the entire campus community.
