Jim’s ability to think creatively enables him to change the culture and business model of Facilities’ Building Systems Maintenance group. His strategic vision, ability to create and empower leadership teams, and commitment to quality served him well when reorganizing one of the university’s largest administrative departments.

In only a year, Jim has transformed Building Services Maintenance from a group of individual craft shops to a zone-based operation with teams strategically placed on both campuses. Zone maintenance is the “gold standard” in higher education facilities operations, and nearly every attempt by colleges and universities across the country to reorganize themselves around this business model have failed, either because it was too expensive or the transition was too complex.
Jim’s ability to identify all the variables and anticipate likely challenges enabled him to develop a phased approach to the reorganization. He accomplished the transformation within the existing budget and with improved services to the UNL community.
Jim is a unique leader who is unafraid to shake things up and who never rests on past successes. Jim is now bringing his skills to all of Facilities Management and Planning, where he is realigning divisions, identifying cost sharing opportunities and developing sound business processes.
Jim is accompanied today by his wife, Dianne Jackson, and son, Justin. Please join me in thanking Jim for his dedication to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and to the Facilities & Maintenance Department.
