The University of Nebraska Foundation is a private, nonprofit corporation that has encouraged giving to the University of Nebraska since 1936. The foundation bridges relationships with alumni, friends, corporations and other foundations interested in a high-quality, affordable public university for Nebraska. Private support is vital to the university’s success in areas such as student scholarships, support for faculty members, academic programs, new or renovated facilities, athletics, research programs, museums and libraries.
Our Students, Our Future is the foundation’s current initiative to secure $200 million for broad support of students, including need- and merit-based scholarships that will make a college education more affordable, support for programs that improve student outcomes particularly among traditionally underrepresented students, improvements to facilities that will enhance the learning experience and other student-focused priorities.
During the foundation’s last fiscal year ending June 30, 2016, donors gave $228.9 million, representing the foundation’s third best year for giving. Of these gifts, $92 million represents pledges made to be fulfilled by donors over time. As is the case every year, more than 99 percent of gifts were designed by donors for a specific university purpose or cause.
The Campaign for Nebraska: Unlimited Possibilities was the foundation’s last comprehensive campaign from 2005 to 2014 with a goal of $1.2 billion. It focused on student financial aid and faculty support as well as university programs with significant impact within Nebraska and around the world, including cancer care and research, water for food, early childhood education and others. Gifts to the campaign topped $1.8 billion with more than 98,000 individuals and organizations contributing.
