Breaking new ground in liver transplant research

Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery
Merle M. Musselman Centennial Professor

Byers W. Shaw, Jr., M.D

A man of vision, Dr. Byers “Bud” Shaw founded UNMC’s liver transplant program in 1985. He has brought his formidable surgical skills to bear, saving the lives of numerous patients. As an administrator, he introduced innovative surgical techniques to his department. And as a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma patient, he counts himself fortunate to be in the care of leading experts in the field—his UNMC colleagues.

Shaw joined the NU Medical Center staff in the mid-1980s, and later co-founded University Hospital's liver transplantation program. He is now chairman of the Medical Center's surgery department.
