President James B. Milliken said, "Engagement with the state is among the highest priorities identified in the university’s strategic framework. I'm pleased that Chairman Hawks has established this task force, which represents a high level of board commitment to outreach and economic development."
The task force will focus on ways the university contributes to the growth of Nebraska’s economy, especially its workforce, and identify ways in which the university can better or more strategically support outreach to the state. The group will also identify areas where faculty, staff, and student expertise allow the university to make unique contributions in the areas of outreach and economic development.
The university's strategic framework includes a number of objectives relating to economic development. These include building a talented, competitive workforce and knowledge-based economy in the state, encouraging the commercialization of research and technology to benefit Nebraska, and connecting Nebraska communities and regions through university programs. The task force will consult with university and external constituents in developing its recommendations.
The first meeting of the task force will be in conjunction with the January 2006 Board of Regents meeting in Lincoln.
