Dr. Jake Kirkland, Jr.Dr. Jake Kirkland, Jr.
This KUDOS recognition goes to Dr. Jake Kirkland, Jr., assistant director of Career Services at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Jake came to the University of Nebraska system in 1981 as a career counselor at UNO, joined the Counseling Center at UNL in 1986, and was named Assistant Director of Career Services in 1992. In addition to providing career counseling services to students from all academic departments, he has specifically coordinated outreach activities to students of color throughout his tenure at the University. Yet Jake does not simply produce programs for students, he involves them in the process. In 1992 he formed a Students of Color Career Advisory Committee, which has produced several significant activities beneficial to students. The Alumni of Color Career Forum allows students to interact in a comfortable setting with alumni who serve as role models from the real world of work. And the annual Networking Workshop gives students an opportunity to practice the art of mixing and mingling with recruiters from a wide variety of organizations. Jake is active on all levels: He has been involved on the advisory committee of the Dr. Melvin Jones Learning Community, has served as co-chair for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King celebrations, and has contributed to numerous committees including the Committee for Recruitment and Retention of Students of Color. Most recently he devoted ten months in helping plan the very successful Big 12 Conference Career and Graduate/Professional School Fair. Jake’s guests today are: his wife, Dr. Dolores Simpson Kirkland; his daughter, Erika Nicole Kirkland; extended family members: Obasi and Bernice Onuoha (O-bossy and Ber-niece O-naw-baw); colleagues and friends, Dr. Marty and Connie Ramierez, and Gregg C. Jablonski; and his supervisor, Dr. Larry Routh. Please join me in congratulating and thanking Jake for helping guide so many students on their career paths at the University of Nebraska.
